Playstation

Playstation does offer some parental controls for it’s users however these can easily be bypassed  if you don’t take some necessary precautions first. Here are a few steps you can take to keep things secure for your family.

If screen time is an issue you may also set time limits for specific user accounts as well. This option is called “Play Time” on the Playstation and instructions on how to do this are located at the bottom of this tutorial.

Disable New User Creation And Guest Login

By turning off the ability to create new local users or log in to the PS4 system as a guest, you can prevent child family members from attempting to bypass parental controls and age rating levels.

  1. On your PS4 system, log in as the family manager and go to [Settings] > [Parental Controls/Family Management] > [PS4 System Restrictions]. You’ll need to enter the system restriction passcode*. If you haven’t set this yet, the default is 0000 (or  on the DS4 controller).
  2. Select [New User Creation and Guest Login] and select ‘Not Allowed’.
  3. We then recommend selecting [Change System Restriction Passcode] and changing it to a memorable 4 digit code to prevent other users gaining access to parental controls.
  4. When you’re done, your changes will be saved automatically.

* Please note the System Restriction Passcode is different to the user login passcode.

Set A Login Password

Setting a login passcode means only the person who knows the passcode will be able to login to the family manager’s local user on the PS4 system. A login passcode is different from the system restriction passcode.

  1. On your PS4 system, go to  [Settings] > [Login Settings] > [Login Passcode Management].
  2. Set a 4 digit passcode using the corresponding buttons on the DS4 controller. Make sure it’s something memorable that only you know.
  3. Enter the 4 digit passcode a second time to confirm.
  4. Once set, you can change or delete the login passcode at any time from the same area.

Set A System Restriction Passcode

The system restriction passcode allows you to prevent child users changing parental controls settings on the PS4 system, such as age ratings and default parental controls. This passcode should be known by only the family manager and parents/guardians in the family.

  1. On your PS4 system, go to  [Settings] > [Parental Controls/Family Management] > [PS4 System Restrictions].
  2. Enter the existing system restriction passcode. If you haven’t set one before the default is 0000 (or  on the DS4 controller).
  3. Select [Change System Restriction Passcode].
  4. Enter a new 4 digit passcode using the corresponding buttons on the DS4 controller. Make sure it’s something memorable that only you know.
  5. Enter the passcode a second time to confirm.
  6. Once set, you can change the system restriction passcode at any time from the same area.

How to manage Play Time controls

As a parent or guardian, it can be hard to oversee how much time younger players are spending on the PS4 system. Play Time management gives family managers (and adult family members who are set as guardians) the ability to set limits on when, and for how long, each child can access PS4 systems.

Play Time controls work alongside System Restrictions and Family Management settings to help keep all accounts safe and secure.

How does Play Time management work?

Setting Play Time is based on three simple settings:

  • Set Play Time Restrictions: ‘Restrict’ or ‘Do Not Restrict’.
  • Allocate Play Times: ‘Time Duration’, ‘Playable Hours’ and ‘End Time’ for every day or specific days of the week.
  • Set an action for when Play Time ends: ‘Notify Family Manager’ or ‘Log Out’ child account.

As young players near the end of their Play Time, coloured notifications will appear at the top of the screen to let them know when they should save and quit.
